Our First Patient | Antonio

In the 1960s, Antonio, a 13-year-old boy from Mexicali, Mexico, was being raised by his grandmother, living apart from his parents and six siblings. He was isolated because of his disfigurement. Antonio had never attended school, and rarely had opportunities for social interactions.

In the late 1960s, doctors from Stanford University Medical Center donated their time to help him and repaired his cleft lip and palate. After his surgery, Antonio was finally permitted to attend school in Mexico and performed very well.

His success and the meaningful—and almost instantaneous—changes in his life gave our founder, Dr. Donald Laub, the inspiration to help others through reconstructive plastic surgery. Since that time, ReSurge has provided more than 100,000 free surgeries around the world.
