Rebecca Cheptegei died in a Kenyan hospital, succumbing to severe burn injuries days after being set on fire by her former partner. Her case underscores a hidden yet urgent issue that ReSurge International increasingly confronts: the growing prevalence of burn cases driven by gender-based violence.

September is Craniofacial Acceptance Month 🧡 A time to spread awareness around cleft and craniofacial differences. Yashika Goel: @goelyashika809 from Dehradun, Uttarakhand, India was born with a cleft lip and palate. As an infant, her birth sparked whispers of doubt amongst relatives, even talk of abandonment. She and her parents navigated misconceptions from people around them who were concerned that Yashika would not be able to speak or lead a conventional life.

Fortunately, through ReSurge Surgical Partner Dr. Yogi Aeron, the love and support of her parents, and her own determination, Yashika was able to receive surgical care, overcome a speech impediment, and thrive academically and professionally — all while owning her truth about what it means to live with a #cleft lip and palate

Her experiences inspired her to raise awareness about this congenital condition and empower others like herself to thrive post-surgery. We are on a Surgical Team Training Trip in Tanzania 🇹🇿 focused on maxillofacial and hand surgery. ReSurge medical volunteers, including surgeons, anesthesiologists, and occupational therapists, are training in advanced skills and collaborating with local surgical teams and ReSurge partners on holistic care 🧡 developing post-operative plans for each patient 🛏️ undergoing anesthesiologist-led training on emergency scenarios 🆘 learning about safety-first practices, and training in post-operative care such as hand therapy 👐

This exemplifies ReSurge's holistic approach to surgical care. Surgery is just one part of the process. Post-operative care, including physiotherapy, speech therapy, and hand therapy is also important for ensuring successful patient outcomes.
