Reconstructive Surgery in Sub-Saharan Africa

In Sub-Saharan Africa, there is roughly one reconstructive surgeon for every 10 million people. For patients living with severe burns, traumatic injuries, or congenital conditions, that gap can mean a lifetime of disability — or worse. ReSurge is closing it. Through the ReSurge International Program in Africa (RIPA), we train local surgeons, fund local surgical partners, and build systems designed to sustain life-changing reconstructive care long after we leave.

A generous ReSurge donor has given a challenge match for all recurring donations designated to Africa. Start a new monthly gift and add “Africa” in the comments and your gift will be doubled 2X!

A Landmark Expansion: Serving 7X More Patients in Uganda and Tanzania

In Uganda and Tanzania, only a handful of reconstructive surgeons serve tens of millions of people — leaving burns, traumatic injuries, and disabling scars untreated for years, or lifetimes. We are scaling access to free, life-changing reconstructive surgery in both countries nearly sevenfold: from 300 patients annually to more than 2,000.

ReSurge is proud to partner with the College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA).

ReSurge has partnered with the largest surgical training college in the region, The College of Surgeons of East, Central, and Southern Africa (COSECSA), on a standardized learning, testing, and certification processes across 14 countries

ReSurge also establishes long-term partnerships between hospitals in the United States and partner institutions across Africa.

  • Stanford University with Parirenyatwa Hospital in Zimbabwe
  • Northwestern University with AIC Kijabe Hospital in Kenya, and
  • Johns Hopkins University with Kiruddu Hospital in Uganda.

These partnerships and training programs allow us to champion equity by connecting the world’s best and brightest directly to the best and brightest local surgical teams in low-income countries.

Sub-Saharan Africa has the most acute shortage of reconstructive surgical care.
93% of the population lack access to surgical care.
There is only 1 reconstructive surgeon for every 10 Million people.
