Meet Sajin, a Burn Survivor and Soccer Lover

Meet Sajin, a Burn Survivor and Soccer Lover

Nepal,
May 20, 2022

“I keep asking my brother for soccer cleats because I love playing, but he tells me, ‘no’ because he is afraid of my head wound. That’s why he bought me this jersey instead.” – Sajin, 14.

Sajin is a ReSurge patient who was electrocuted when a faulty high voltage power line fell on him. He was rushed to a local pharmacy where they put a dressing on the wounds. After stops at three different hospitals that couldn’t help, he was finally referred to The Nepal Cleft & Burn Center, run by ReSurge Nepal Director, Dr. Shankhar Rai.

“If we didn’t find this facility, it would be a painful life I could not imagine,” says his brother. Sajin received burns on various parts of his body and had one of his hands amputated up to the mid part of his forearm.

His recovery plan involved going back to the center nearly 20-times to slowly repair the skin over his scalp in a process that slowly stretches the skin.

Sajin remains a committed soccer fan and wants to be a singer or a teacher one day.

We are committed to giving patients like Sajin who can’t afford treatment the best possible care. Make a donation to support patients like Sajin here.

Surgical Outreach Partner Spotlight: Dr. Pedro Santos

Surgical Outreach Partner Spotlight: Dr. Pedro Santos

Mozambique,
May 18, 2022

Dr. Pedro Santos grew up in Mozambique during a time of civil war. His father, a doctor, would come home with stories of the atrocities he would see. As a young boy, Pedro marveled at the difference his father could make by providing medical support to so many caught in the violence. These memories, combined with seeing a documentary about plastic and reconstructive surgery when he was 13, are what inspired Dr. Santos to pursue a career in reconstructive surgery.

“I went into reconstructive surgery because it provides a solution for patients’ problems,” said Dr. Santos. “I have the opportunity to help people, see real results and get them back to their lives with the least amount of complications.”

Mozambique is a country comprised of 30 million people. However, according to Dr. Santos, there are only 4,000 medical doctors in the whole country. Of those, less than a hundred are surgeons, and of those surgeons, only three perform reconstructive surgery.

Dr. Santos heard of ReSurge many years ago when teams of visiting surgical educators came to Mozambique.  Dr. Santos has now been a surgical outreach partner with ReSurge for the past two years.

We sat down with him recently to learn more about his background and experience with ReSurge.

Did you receive your surgical training in Mozambique?

I went into medical school here in Mozambique. There are very few medical schools in this country, so very few people go into medicine. When I finished my medical degree, I went to work in the jungle– literally in the jungle–in a remote area further north for three years delivering medical care. It is hard to leave these remote areas because it is difficult to get someone to replace you. That makes it emotionally difficult.  However, after three years, I had to leave to do my surgical training. Since reconstructive surgery was mostly non-existent in Mozambique, I was able to travel to many other countries to train and meet people in the field I was pursuing. I had the chance to go to Brazil where I did part of my training as a plastic surgeon, then onward to Asia.

Around the time that I finished my training, I met Dr. David Kulber. I learned so much from him and other prominent people in the field. Years later, Dr. Kulber began coming to Mozambique with ReSurge, offering training and assistance with surgeries. This was a great help in my training. In 2019, I was given the opportunity to be a surgical outreach partner, I was very excited because I was familiar with the good work of ReSurge.

What types of surgeries do you perform the most?

I work almost exclusively in reconstructive surgery. Most of the patients I treat at our public hospital are burn patients. I treat acute burns, but I also treat patients with complications and late progression of burns with contractures. I also take care of patients with congenital deformities of the face and hands.  But primarily, our patients are suffering from burns and most are children.

Unfortunately, our population has many challenges and the availability of electricity and gas is not widely distributed. People still use open fires to cook or heat water. Often kids are accidentally injured, but it is difficult to change these circumstances. You are really talking about changing the culture when it comes to burn prevention, which is not easy in such a diverse country. Mozambique has eleven main languages and 33 dialects. Helping people understand the dangers of open fires can be a real challenge.

What are you most proud of as a reconstructive surgeon?

There are a few things that I really enjoy about taking care of my acute patients, particularly the kids. They come in very bad shape, barely moving and crying. But if you act quickly, these kids are able to recover very quickly and get back to normal life.  In a short amount of time, you can have them standing up, sitting, playing, and eating. It’s fantastic. This is very rewarding as a surgeon. The key is having the resources available to you when you need them.

Kids are amazing in that respect, but it’s not only kids that I treat: the parents are involved too. When you’re able to help those kids, you see hope in the eyes of the parents. That is priceless.

Is there a specific case or patient story that has really stood out to you over the years?

There’ve been quite a few, but there’s one that is very touching. Last year in August, an 8-year-old girl was rushed into our hospital with severe burns. Her dress had caught fire when she was walking by the open fire in their home. She sustained deep burns on her whole chest area and thighs. While the child did live with extended family, her mother had passed away and her father did not live with them due to work. We needed a lot of skin for grafting, more than we could get from the injured girl. She actually happened to have a twin sister.  The sister was brought into the hospital and saw how badly her sister was injured. When the healthy sister was asked if she would donate skin to help heal her sister’s wounds, she didn’t hesitate.  She said yes, no questions asked; it was an instant response. We took both of them in for surgery the next week, with two operating tables and teams ready. It was a long recovery for both of them.  I had the opportunity to visit them at their home later and they were doing great. This is a memory I will have forever.

How did COVID-19 affect your patient load?  Do you have a backlog?

We went through a difficult time, experiencing a third wave of the COVID-19 pandemic at the end of 2021. We are still standing though, there’s no other way. There’s no way to run from what we are facing, so we do the best we can!

Can you talk a bit about the training that ReSurge provides for you and for your staff?

It was wonderful to have them here to help train staff when traveling was allowed before COVID-19. But since then, we are training even more thanks to the ReSurge webinars. That’s the positive side! We were exposed to more virtual training and had even more connections with colleagues and surgical experts from around the world. I appreciate their ability to train the whole surgical staff too, not just the surgeons.

What are your goals for the future of reconstructive surgery and Mozambique?

We need more people doing reconstructive surgery. We need it a lot. With the help of ReSurge, we are slowly beginning to set up a training center at my hospital, allowing me to bring in more medical professionals for training and more patients.  Harnessing and teaching knowledge in this field is really important for the future. On a personal basis, I’ve been doing plastic and reconstructive surgery for some time, but I still love to learn. I want to provide the latest techniques and knowledge so my patients will have the best results possible.

2022 Transformations Gala: A Global Festival

2022 Transformations Gala: A Global Festival

USA Headquarters
April 27, 2022

The 2022 ReSurge Transformations Gala: A Global Festival was a huge success! Thank you to everyone who joined us, either in person or in spirit, to celebrate ReSurge’s mission and impact. This year’s gala took place at the Palace of Fine Arts on April 23rd, and celebrated our international community, and the 19 countries where ReSurge currently works. Read on to get the highlights of the evening, access all the photos from the gala, and watch our mission video!

The evening started with a cocktail reception, sponsored by Carlson Beck. Guests had specialty cocktails, passed appetizers representing different countries, and a champagne toast. Guests were also able to interact with art installations featuring facts about ReSurge around the world, continent lounge areas, and a silent auction table featuring 19 Country Mystery Boxes. The cocktail hour also featured a Magnum Mayhem, with 20 premium magnums up for auction.

After the cocktail hour, guests went into the dinner lounge for a delicious meal from McCalls Catering, and to enjoy the evening’s program.

2022 Transformations Gala Co-Chairs, Dr. Arvin Teneja and Dr. Tomas Davenport were the MCs of the evening along with ReSurge President and CEO, Jeff Whisenant, and Board Chair, Meredith Taylor. Dr. James Chang, ReSurge’s Consulting Medical Officer, spoke about our programs and funding needs, and volunteer auctioneer Lenny Broburg lead a lively auction benefiting our mission. We were blown away by the generosity of our guests in the room!

We were also proud to present the ‘Partner in Progress Award’ to SkinCeuticals, our partners in the Pioneering Women in Reconstructive Surgery (PWRS) Initiative. ReSurge Board Member and SkinCeuticals Senior VP of Marketing and Product Innovation, Derrick Booker, accepted the award.

One of the highlights of the evening was Special Guest Speaker, Dr. Seif Nuru who is the first Annual Scholar of the ReSurge International Program in Africa (RIPA) program. Dr. Nuru met ReSurge in 2015, when he was a general surgeon working in rural Tanzania. At that time there were no reconstructive surgeons in a country of 60 Million people. ReSurge sponsored him for a year of reconstructive surgery training in Uganda so that he could return to his hospital and help those patients in need.

Dr. Nuru gave an emotional speech about one of his patients in Tanzania, and how the training and support ReSurge gave him allowed him to treat the challenging case.

The evening concluded with dancing and a live performance by the Mitch Woods Band.

Want more? Access the full gallery of photos here and here. You can also keep the momentum going by donating to our programs here.

If you’d like to learn more about ReSurge, watch the below video, which premiered at the gala, to see how ReSurge is scaling up our model to enact a ripple effect of change.

A special thanks to RealSelf, Brandon O’Lary, Henrique Campos Ligeiro, and SkinCeuticals for providing courtesy footage for this production.

Before you go, we want to send a huge thank you to our volunteers, staff, and generous sponsors who made this evening possible.

When Dr. Fox was in medical school and was randomly assigned to do a rotation of plastic and reconstructive surgery, she didn’t know that it would soon become her calling. After her first trip as a medical volunteer with ReSurge International, this calling solidified as a life-long dedication to serving the international community and supporting women surgeons around the world.

Dharshan Sivaraj, our ReSurge medical student volunteer, met up with Dr. Fox to learn about her passion for ReSurge and giving back, as well as advice to other female surgeons on how to balance life, work and making the world a better place.

Could you talk about how you decided to pursue training in reconstructive surgery?

I stumbled upon plastic and reconstructive surgery as an MD, PhD student in medical school. I did my PhD in infectious disease and was planning to do an internal medicine residency, ultimately to become an infectious disease doctor. However, I came to the realization that I needed to pursue an interventional specialty because I enjoyed hands-on work. At my medical school, we were randomly assigned two specialties during our surgery rotation, in addition to general surgery. I was randomly assigned to plastic surgery and that is what set me on the path to becoming a plastic surgeon. I worked with a phenomenal chief resident and was totally impressed by his ability to walk in a room, look at a defect, determine a course of action, and immediately address that defect. I loved the idea of problem-solving on the spot. I decided to become a plastic surgeon and it was the best decision I ever made. I love what I do, and I love that it is a hands-on specialty that changes people’s lives.

How were you introduced to ReSurge International?

I had heard of ReSurge many years ago when it was Interplast. The organization had always been known for bringing high-quality surgical care to patients in developing countries. During the fourth year of my residency, I went on my first international trip to a small hospital in Cambodia with ReSurge Consulting Medical Officer Dr. James Chang. There was only one local surgeon at that hospital, and he did everything from general surgery to urology. He had put together a list of hand surgery patients from the surrounding area and brought them all in for us to see. That was my first introduction to seeing so many patients with no access to surgical care. It was incredible because some patients had small problems that could be treated in an outpatient fashion. However, other patients had larger problems that would need multiple-stage procedures and needed more than we could offer on that one short trip. During that trip, I realized the magnitude of need that was present, but also the potential magnitude of impact that could be made. I knew that I wanted to keep international work as part of my practice. It was clear to me that I had been given a great opportunity to learn reconstructive surgery and hand surgery. I wanted to share my knowledge and skills with people around the world.

What was your first Visiting Educator Trip as an attending physician like?
My first trip was to Zimbabwe. We were focused on doing cases that taught the basics of hand surgery, as well as cases that were rare and unique. It was interesting because despite only having two or three plastic surgeons in the whole country, the hospital had a burgeoning residency program in reconstructive surgery. There were several trainees coming up in general surgery who had a desire to learn reconstructive surgery. I realized that the ReSurge model would be successful in Zimbabwe because there were trainees there who had a strong interest in becoming practicing reconstructive surgeons within their home country.

Dr. Fox and Dr. Chang Performing Hand Surgery

Are there any cases from a ReSurge affiliated trip that stand out for you?

One that stands out was a difficult macrodactyly case; macrodactyly refers to overgrowth of the hand digits. I operated on the patient and was able to reduce the size of their finger, however it remained larger than I would have liked. At the end of the case, I was slightly disappointed because while I was able to improve the problem, it was not completely resolved. During a conversation with one of the local surgeons later, I was told that the patient loved their result in follow-up and was excited for me to come back to address the same problem on their other hand. This was early in my career, and while it was a humbling experience for me in the operating room, it was also nice to know that I really made an impact for the patient.

Another case that stands out was one that a craniofacial surgeon colleague performed. It was a large craniofacial reconstruction of a young female who had been run over by a cart. Her face needed significant reconstruction which the local team could not offer. In the United States, we would use several small plates and screws for this type of case. However, the local hospital did not have access to those plates and screws, so patients had to buy them and bring them to the operating room themselves. My colleague used some of the plates and screws that the patient had brought, but he mainly used wires to fixate the facial fractures, which is a technique that was used in the early days of craniofacial surgery. Ultimately, the patient’s postoperative result was incredible, and I was able to witness firsthand the profound impact that the operations we do can have despite limited resources.

Do you have any advice for female surgical trainees interested in pursuing a career similar to yours, which incorporates global outreach?

I went on my first ReSurge trip as a fourth-year resident and another trip in my sixth year of residency. But I didn’t go on any trips again until I was in my second year in practice. The reason being that I had a child during that time. I think it is important for female trainees to know that there will be gaps in their ability to be involved, and one must balance involvement with family time and home time. As surgeons, we are well equipped to do that since each day we balance our schedule between things we need to do for work and things we need to do for our home life. The great thing about ReSurge is that visiting educators can choose to go when they have the time and energy that is required to give to a particular trip. I think that is important because if a surgeon wants to make Resurge and global outreach a part of their life, they must have the energy to be a good teacher and mentor while on these visiting educator trips.

Is there anything else that you would like to mention about ReSurge?

I think there are two important things that ReSurge does well – mentorship and standardized education. The mentorship component is important because there are not a lot of econstructive surgeons in the developing world due to a lack of access to training and guidance. The standardized education component ensures that we provide consistent, high-quality training. Something that we have not touched on during our conversation is that it is essential to provide the same quality of care abroad that we provide here in the United States. ReSurge really focuses on that by having experts go as visiting educators to teach the workup of the patient, the surgical procedure, and then how to care for the patient post-operatively. ReSurge understands that what is important is not necessarily the number of patients we are impacting on each trip, but rather, the quality of the local surgeons that we are developing. This aspect of ReSurge’s mission is very important to me.

Dr. Seif Nuru: ReSurge’s first Annual Reconstructive Surgery Scholarship Recipient

Dr. Seif Nuru: ReSurge’s first Annual Reconstructive Surgery Scholarship Recipient

Tanzania,
April 4, 2022

Dr. Seif Nuru is a general surgeon from Tanzania, studying in Uganda, and ReSurge’s first Annual Reconstructive Surgery Scholarship recipient.

This full scholarship allows one promising young surgeon to spend one year at a ReSurge training hub in Africa to learn reconstructive surgery and then return to his or her home country to treat local patients.

Dr. Seif Nuru is from a rural area in Tanzania, a country of 58 million people, and only one certified reconstructive surgeon, who graduated as recently as December 2020.

With such a scarcity of reconstructive surgeons, Dr. Nuru, a general surgeon, became passionate about reconstructive surgery after working with a number of ReSurge visiting surgical volunteers during our trips to his country, and because of the large burden of burn cases he receives due to open fire cooking in the rural setting where he works.

To further the career of this promising reconstructive surgeon, we provided him with our first annual scholarship award to study for one year with surgical experts at Mulago Hospital in Uganda. This scholarship was made possible by a generous ReSurge volunteer who saw the value of such a program.

I have no words to express my feelings, but I am so very happy I feel like crying. I know how lucky I am. I never Imagined that people thousands of kilometers away can see my potential and look for ways to help me. I come from a poor family, I am the first to get a degree, the first to travel out of our village and first to travel out of Tanzania.”–Dr. Seif Nuru

Dr. Nuru will be our special guest speaker at the 2022 ReSurge Transformations Gala on April 23rd. Reserve your tickets here!
