ReSurge International was awarded $4,000,000 in grant funds from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through the American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) Program for surgical equipment in Nepal and Vietnam. These projects are made possible by the generous support of the American people and will support the direct provision of reconstructive surgical care as well as the training of local surgical teams.
In Nepal the equipment procured through this award will also help support ReSurge’s burn care program, which includes the country’s only skin bank (an initiative in partnership with Stanford University and Kirtipur Hospital in Kathmandu). This equipment will increase ReSurge International’s capacity for both the provision of surgical care and for training in Nepal – allowing more patients to receive the care they need, and more local surgical teams to be equipped to provide this care sustainably in the future.
In Vietnam this award will provide ReSurge with surgical equipment needed for the training of local Vietnamese surgical teams as well as for the provision of reconstructive surgical care for patients in need. This equipment will increase ReSurge’s capacity in Vietnam, and will also support the development of ReSurge’s breast reconstruction program – an initiative undertaken in partnership with the Hue Odonto-Stomatology Hospital in Hue, Vietnam and Stanford University’s Women’s Cancer Center. This is the first breast reconstruction program of its kind in Vietnam and will help elevate Vietnam’s capacity to provide care and treatment for cancer locally.
“We are deeply grateful for the generous federal funding awarded by USAID/ASHA, representing a groundbreaking moment in ReSurge’s history. Because the grants are focused exclusively on procuring crucially-needed medical equipment for our program sites in Nepal and Vietnam, ReSurge will be able to direct more of our fundraising dollars to training local in-country surgical teams and covering the cost of many more life-changing surgeries.”
ABOUT RESURGE INTERNATIONAL
ReSurge International is a global nonprofit that has spearheaded the global surgery movement since 1969. Our mission is to train, fund, and scale reconstructive surgical teams in low-income countries, providing free, life-transforming care to those most in need. ReSurge builds reconstructive surgical capacity across 18 countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America and trains local surgeons to heal those around them, with a strong emphasis on equitable access to training, particularly for women and other marginalized groups. By scaling our model, we have made a significant impact on entire regions and economies, while ensuring that individual patient care remains a core focus.
